Ike Us

When Ike was just a little depression off the coast of Africa it was said that it’s location would probably put it out of the way of harm for America. Such an initial track would mean that it would swever north before getting close enough to our mainland to inflict any harm. And it was still a depression. Ike then became a minimal hurricane tracking further south and west. And now?

Thursday Ike had burst into a full-fledged category 4 hurricane it it looked like it might head towards the southern part of Florida- can you say Miami. Having just looked at the most recent National Hurricane Center advisory # 18, hurricane Ike is now tracking between Cuba and Florida, crossing over the keys and into the Gulf before turning north.

Who knows?

Answer- no one! How low will he go? How far south will Ike track before turning back North and West? We’ll have to leave that answer to the weather gods and of course the low and high pressure systems that build between now and early next week. Could tehre be a scenario where New Orleans has yet another evacuation? You bet,a dn you bet few will agree to leave unless Ike is a CAT 5 and headed dead on to the Big Easy.

Ike’s top winds of 120 mph keep it a Category 3 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale, according to the hurricane center’s 11 a.m. advisory. The offocial forecast calls for Ike to be a Category 3 major hurricane as it approaches the Florida coast next week. Ike was centered 425 miles (685 kilometers) north of the Leeward Islands and was moving toward the west about 16 mph (24 kph). Ike is expected to continue westward for the next several days before turning west-northwest toward Florida, the hurricane center said.

In other words, while the East Coast (all of it) is looking for a very wet weekend from tropical storm Hanna, she will be nothing compared to what Ike seems to be up to giving us. We shall see.

This study of Eisenhower's role as spymaster covers both World War II and his two-term presidency. Ike was responsible for successful and unsuccessful operations--including the use of ULTRA intelligence to foil the German army's counterattacks, and the fiasco involving Francis Gary Powers and the U-2 flights over the Soviet Union. Eisenhower made full use of the CIA to gather intelligence as well as to engage in assassination attempts and to topple unfriendly governments. Ambrose sees Ike as an important cold warrior.

Ike's Instrumentals Ike's Instrumentals
$20.99

Full performer name: Ike Turner & His Kings Of Rhythm. This collection includes the album DANCE, originally released on Sue Records, as well as intrumentals recorded for the Flair, Crown and Stevens labels.Recorded between 1954 and 1964.Taken from a variety of sources, this collects 22 of Ike Turner's instrumentals from 1954-1965, none of them vocals, none of them recorded with Tina Turner, and all of them highlighting his guitar work. Turner's really wild and uninhibited for much of this set, especially in his ferocious string-bending and use of the whammy bar. While the tunes themselves are mostly generic R&B with a touch of rock & roll, it's also fair to say that generic instrumental rock rarely sounds this good, mostly because Turner's guitar work is so much more inventive and passionate than the nominal songs to which they're tethered. About half of this consists of the tracks on his 1962 Sue album, Dance With Ike & Tina Turner and Their Kings of Rhythm Band, a good showcase for his crackling axework on a batch of mostly self-imposed wordless workouts. There are also a couple of numbers he cut in the late '50s under the pseudonym Icky Renrut; a 1965 single with brass that has a more soul-oriented arrangement than anything else here, albeit soul of a gutbucket kind; and a smattering of items dating back to his mid-'50s R&B days with Flair. There's also an odd nine-minute medley of instrumental blues covers, "All the Blues All the Time," which wound up on a 1963 Crown LP, Rocks the Blues. ~ Richie Unterberger

The D-Day invasion - the largest military operation of World War II and the beginning of the end - marked Dwight Ike Eisenhowerias one of America's most powerful military leaders. Ike: Countdown To D-Day follows the 90 terrifying days leading up to the invasion as Eisenhower decides the fate of thousands of soldiers while managing complex strategic relationships with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, American General George S. Patton, Britain's Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery and French President Charles de Gaulle. It was a time of no guarantees and certainly no second chances. In this climate, one man, Dwight Eisenhower, pulled the world's leaders together for one of history's most infamous battles.
Great (Ft Ike Turner & Ikettes) Great (Ft Ike Turner & Ikettes)
$9.99

Personnel includes: Tina Turner, Ike Turner, The Ikettes. An entertaining hodgepodge of an album. No credits are given, but from the aural evidence it's a mix of r&b tracks from the early '60s, including the duo's first hits ("A Fool in Love" and the often covered "It's Gonna Work Out Fine") and early '70s demo material recorded at Ike Turner's home studio. The '60s stuff is vastly entertaining, with Tina's don't-mess-with-me personna already in place, but the later work is particularly fascinating, with Ike's brilliant guitar coming into increased prominence (see the re-make of "River Deep-Mountain High," in which Ike replaces Phil Spector's Wall of Sound with Stones-ish funk).
Ike Turner - The Bad Man Ike Turner - The Bad Man
$15.97

Personnel: Ike Turner; Fontella Bass, Jimmy Thomas, The Ikettes, Tina Turner, Dee Dee Johnson, Robbie Montgomery, Vernon Guy.Liner Note Author: Kevin Goins. The Bad Man chronicles Ike Turner`s attempts in the early `60s to launch his own record labels. After moving to Los Angeles in 1963, Turner bought a house, set up a home studio, and began recording some primal R&B and soul featuring Tina Turner, the Ikettes, Fontella Bass, and others. None of the labels (Innis, Prann, Sonja, Sony, or Teena) amounted to much commercially, but quite a few of the sides on this disc stack up well against the hits Ike & Tina were having at the time for Sue. All of them have the quick and nasty sound that Ike always favors. Fidelity and a crisp clean sound were never priorities for Turner; instead, he wanted excitement and sweat, and that is what he usually got. The most successful and fully realized songs on The Bad Man feature Tina, as she was the perfect foil for Ike`s clattering wall of sound. She sounds demure and cute on "I`m Going Back Home" and tough as nails on the strutting "If I Can`t Be First." The competition is pretty strong though. The Ikettes turn in some fine performances on the folk-rock-styled remake of "So Fine," the Lee Hazlewood (!) production "Here`s Your Heart," and the sweet "So Blue Over You." Fontella Bass`s two songs sound terrible (like the masters were soaked in beer for 30 years), but her performances are rock-solid soul, and Vernon Guy`s sweet and mellow Sam Cooke-styled ballad "Anything to Make It With You" might be the best song on the disc. The end of the disc drops off some as featured artists like Bobby Johns, Jimmy Thomas, and George Jackson are about as exciting as their names promise, and their tracks exhibit a touch of the production-line mentality Ike was sometimes prone to. Overall though, The Bad Man is a fine addition to Night Train`s The Ike Turner Diaries series. ~ Tim Sendra Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

He called it one of the hardest things he ever didas difficult as leading the D-Day invasion. When Dwight Eisenhower sent the 101st Airborne to Little Rock to integrate Central High School in September 1957, he couldn't know that he was fighting the last great battle of his career...one that would change forever both him and his country. This is the story of how one of America's greatest leaders confronted America's greatest sin. This is the unlikely tale of how Ike became a civil rights president. Ike represents is a revolution in scholarship on Eisenhower and civil rights. Though not uncritical, the book credits his steady personal advance on the issue as well as his accomplishments in the military and as president. Drawing on thousands of primary documents (including newly released material), Ike's Last Battle builds to its climax at Little Rockone of the most pivotal events of the civil rights movement. Little Rock is at the epicenter, but the book will also look at the cause, and the aftermath.

As such, this set by Ike & Tina Turner is no exception. It's packaged somewhat generically, but does contain five early-'60s studio albums as well as a best-of featuring material from the later '60s and early '70s. As such, it's hard to deny, since virtually all of these albums simply burn with rhythm & blues heat and rock & roll intensity. This is the pre- "Proud Mary"/"Nutbush City Limits" band, produced raw and alive with Ike's signature WHOMP on the guitar and Tina's almost superhuman wail. For the time being, these recordings are unavailable individually, making this box a necessity for all serious fans of the Turner family's work.

Personnel: Ike Turner (vocals, guitar, piano). The often-controversial Ike Turner is unfortunately best known for his behind-the-scenes contributions to R&B and rock & roll (he claims his "Rocket 88" was the first rock-&-roll record) and his violence toward his former wife, the singer Tina Turner. But this set is evidence that, after more than six decades as a musician, he`s still more than capable of producing a compelling collection of down-and-dirty blues and funk. Starting with the deep groove of "Gimme Back My Wig" and a nod to his roots on the jump blues of "Caledonia," Turner also revisits "A Love Like Yours," which he and Tina first recorded in 1966 with Phil Spector. And his unapologetic, gospel-tinged "Jesus Loves Me" points an accusing finger back at his unforgiving critics. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

PROUD MARY-THE BEST OF IKE & TINA contains songs from Ike & Tina`s stint with the Minit, Liberty and Untied Artists labels.Personnel includes: Ike Turner (vocals, guitar, bass); Tina Turner (vocals); The Ikettes (background vocals).Producers include: Ike Turner, Juggy Murray, Mickey & Sylvia, Gerhard Augustin, Claude Williams.Compilation producer: Ron Furmanek.Includes liner notes by Al Quaglieri.Tracks 1-7 are mono. Tracks 8-23 are stereo.Digitally remastered by Larry Walsh (November 1990, Capitol Recording Studios). This is part of the EMI Legends Of Rock & Roll series.Liner Note Author: Al Quaglieri.Photographer: Jeffrey Scales. With one conspicuous exception, this one disc best-of is the definitive collection of this tempestuous duo`s music. That exception, of course, is the cut of "River Deep, Mountain High," which isn`t the epochal Phil Spector-produced single, but rather a live version. However, it`s perfectly acceptable on its own terms, though purists will lament the lack of Spector`s famous Wall Of Sound (what`s here is more like a Small Chain Mail Fence Of Sound).Everything else, however, is first-rate, from smolderingly raunchy early `60s singles like "It`s Gonna Work Out Fine" (presented, thankfully, in the original mono), to Tina`s autobiographical "Nutbush City Limits" from the early `70s. Essential stuff. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

They were both double albums later released as a single CD, each featuring a wide variety of styles and containing similar-sounding production (very `80s). If you`re a fan of Zappa`s thought provoking, impeccably played `80s work, THEM OR US is highly recommended. The album proved to be the last studio recording that actively involved guitarist Steve Vai.Zappa always had a soft spot in his heart for late `50s doo-wop, and he starts the album off with a cover of the golden oldie "The Closer You Are" (which includes an impressive vocal harmony courtesy of Mr. Zappa himself). But not all of THEM OR US is retro--there is plenty of Zappa`s trademark musical dementia to go around. "In France" features one of Frank`s musical heroes, legendary guitarist Johnny "Guitar" Watson on vocals, and is one of the album`s many humorous tracks (along with "Baby, Take Your Teeth Out," "Frogs With Dirty Little Lips," etc.). The best track has to be the guitar duel "Stevie`s Spanking," which features Vai and Zappa`s son Dweezil trading off impressive guitar lines at the song`s end. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Personnel: Ike Quebec (tenor saxophone, piano); Grant Green (guitar); Paul Chambers (bass); Philly Joe Jones (drums).Personnel: Ike Quebec (tenor saxophone, piano); Grant Green (guitar); Sonny Clark (piano); Paul Chambers (bass instrument, upright bass); Sam Jones (upright bass); Philly Joe Jones (drums).Although not as well known as other big tenor men like John Coltrane, Hank Mobley, or Benny Golson, Ike Quebec was a major contributor to the classic era of jazz and this 1961 Blue Note date captures him in his prime. BLUE & SENTIMENTAL is indeed one of but a few discs that Quebec recorded for Blue Note, although he was involved with the legendary label as an A&R man and performed on many sessions by other artists. His huge, velvety tone and bluesy swagger are Quebec`s signature as he lopes and swings through several classic tunes like Count Basie`s lazy title track, the bouncing "That Old Black Magic," and Cole Porter`s hauntingly melodic "It`s Alright With Me." Filling out the quartet are no less than Grant Green, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones, Blue Note regulars all, who shine brightly as always. Other choice moments on this disc include Quebec and Green`s tight interaction on Quebec`s catchy "Minor Impulse," the smoky ballad "Don`t Take Your Love From Me," and the easy-going closer "Count Every Star." Backcountry Pilot: Flying Adventures with Ike Russell Backcountry Pilot: Flying Adventures with Ike Russell
$17.84

When people get together around southern Arizona, there's a good chance that somebody will say, That reminds me of the time I flew with Ike Russell.... A backcountry pilot famous for his jaunts into the wildest, most remote regions of the borderlands, Alexander Ike Russell has become something of a legend since his death in 1980, and the stories surrounding his flights never fail to amaze. This book combines biography and oral history by offering a wide range of anecdotes and remembrances about Ike by friends and family Many describe the great adventures and gut-wrenching close calls that have become enshrined in local folklore as classic Ike Russell stories, in all their hair-raising and hilarious splendor.Russell was an easterner who moved to Arizona for his health and got his pilot's license in 1948 -- despite suffering from a respiratory disorder that would have kept other men firmly anchored to the ground. Over the years he flew scientists and other scholars to remote field locations in Mexico's Gulf of California and Sierra Madre Occidental that otherwise might not have been investigated. He often landed on short and dangerous airstrips and never seemed to mind running out of gas, getting caught without provisions, or attempting night landings in unlighted terrain. He took along a teapot wherever he went -- and wherever he stopped, his first priority was to brew a quick cup.Backcountry Pilot is the story of a larger-than-life adventurer, with those who knew Ike sharing tales tall and true about his famous exploits, brushes with fate, and sometimes narrow escapes from the jaws of disaster. It includes reminiscences by such scientists and friends as botanist RichardFelger, whom Ike frequently flew down to Seriland; ethnohistorian Bernard Fontana, whom Ike took to Tarahumara country; and paleoecologist Paul Martin, who talked Ike into a nine-month trip through Africa over totally unfamiliar terrain. A concluding chapter by Thomas Bowen offers a brief biographical sketch of Russell.Ike Russell was a central figure for a generation of people who studied the southwestern desert and who helped others see it as a biological treasure rather than a wasteland. More than a highly skilled bush pilot, he was an extraordinary human being who touched the lives of everyone he met. For those who never got the chance, Backcountry Pilot secures Ike Russell's legacy in the desert skies.
